Series 65 Investment Advisor Exam

People wishing to enter the financial advising business can obtain a license before looking for a job. One of those tests is the Series 65 Exam and the license it gives you is the Registered Investment Advisor designation.

The exam itself is a 130 question multiple choice test. Contrary to what some think, there is no educational pre-requisite to take this test. A finance degree or other college degree is not required. A degree in finance or otherwise certainly helps in the job market though. Still, having some designations going in, and showing your willingness to succeed in the financial advising business can be enough.

The Series 65 exam centers around the primary investment vehicles that are out there: Bonds, Stocks, some funds. The risk associated with these investment types is also covered at great length. The test also includes analysis topics, such as: Balance sheet overview, P/E ratio and a few other formulas. Also some technical analysis areas like: Trading ranges, support and resistance levels of stocks, and trends.

Suitability and recommendations are key areas on the Series 65 exam as well. That is really what advising is all about when you think about it. What tax bracket an investor is in and are they suitable for tax free bonds. Age and income of the person, which could be used in determining length and credit rating of the investment or financial plan.

There are also rules and regulations on the exam. Most of these center around the Investment Advisors Act and Uniform Securities Act. These areas of the exam are mostly memorization and not difficult to get down.

The exam preparation time with material provided by American Investment Training is about 4 weeks or so. Taking the practice tests and carefully reading the answer explanations is a great way to "tone up" in the final 2 weeks. Passing grade for the Series 65 is 68.5%. You can register for the exam using the U-10 form that can be provided with the course. Once you register to take the exam, you will have 120 days to take the test with that registration. That is plenty of time to get ready. There is an exam fee of $110 to take the test.

If a student fails, they must wait 30 days to take the test again. The Series 65 Exam is given on computer by Prometric testing centers. There are hundreds of these centers, with locations in every state and select international locations. Once you have studied and have registered using the form, you will receive a confirmation with the 800# to reach any testing center in the country.

The Series 65 license looks very strong on a resume and is suitable for many many people. CPA's, Attorneys, Mortgage Brokers, Stockbrokers and estate planners see the advantage in obtaining this license. The job market in finance is tough sometimes, so why not improve your credentials?

A stockbroker will normally train to sell all types of investments such as bonds, stocks, mutual funds and others. This is a profession where the broker learning and training really never ends. How to prospect, learning new product and other issues are a continuous part of being a financial sales broker. There is also continuing education that will be required.

Futures and Commodities

An career area of the online broker training environment is the futures and commodities market. To become one, a person must pass the Series 3 exam. This test normally requires 4-6 weeks of online or distance training before a person can pass this license exam. Q: Who is required to take the Series 7?

A: FINRA investment brokers and other employees of a firm.

Q: Is it a difficult exam?

A: It is a large exam, so the time and amount of material in it can be intimidating at first. However, it really comes down to just good study habits and passing the practice exams. Using a CD test simulator is very helpful.

Q: How long does it take to prepare for the exam?

A: Normally 2 months, but the good thing about the Series 7 is that it can be taken any day of the week (once you are registered through FINRA).

Q: What does the test focus on mostly?

A: It covers the entire securities market, but the most amount of questions are in Regulations, Debt (bonds), Customer Accounts and Options.

A: How many times can I sit for the exam?

Q: If you fail the test, you must wait 30 days before sitting for the Series 7 again. If you fail it 3 times, you must wait 6 months. After each fail thereafter - a 6 month wait is mandatory between attempts. This would be very unusual for a person to fail this many times though. As long as you passing the practice tests, you should pass on the first try.

Q: What other licenses are attractive to employers?

A: The most popular license over the last 3 years has been the Series 65 License. The 65 exam is to become a registered investment advisor. People who hold the Series 65 can charge fees for investment advice, instead of commissions. The Series 7 does not cover that. The Series 63 is also required of most employees. This covers state licensing. The Series 65 and the Series 63 do not require company sponsorship either. They are very attractive looking on a resume.

A: This business has gotten extremely competitive. Any licensing that you do can work to your advantage. Independently, and without company affiliation, you can take the SERIES 65. The Series 65 is to become a Registered Investment Adviser. It is for fee based financial planning. It looks terrific on a resume, takes about 4 weeks to study for, and is given daily like all the other exams. Another good independent test you can do is the SERIES 63. The Series 63 is pretty much mandatory to work in the investment business. Note: You can take the SERIES 66 independently, but this license is only active when you also pass the Series 7. You can take the 66 first though. All self registration exams can be taken using the U-10 form, which can be found on our links page.

Q: What other NASD administered licenses can I or should I take on my own?

Challenges in the real estate sales market include: real estate trends and shrinking real estate commissions. Agents have to work harder and longer to earn the same money they did just 5 years ago. Investment, insurance and loan brokers rely on phone work. Cold calling and prospecting is what you will be doing in the beginning and it is necessary. The money is there with these jobs, but it is first and foremost a sales job, and even more accurately - a telephone sales job. Commissions are the goal and the salary (if any) is minimal. Mortgage backed securities offer the best alternative to decreased loan demand. Pass throughs, CMO’s and adjustable rate MBS’s are paid to the bank just like a loan that the banks has made for a mortgage. If a person takes out a $250,000 mortgage, the customer is paying back the bank monthly with principle and interest. As you know, if you own a home, your initial payments are mostly INTEREST in the early years. A mortgage backed security, if it is a new issue will operate the same way.

Length of the outstanding mortgages, or current face of the mortgages are a factor. “Seasoned pools”, as they are called, are mortgage pools that have had several years of payment on them. They have more predictable payments and duration. They will normally pay better because of that. Seasoned pools are usually what banks are looking for. They are generally interested in better cash flow and predictable cash flow.

The compensation or mark up potential is good in mortgage backed bonds. They are priced above treasuries because, although they are AAA rated, they are not absolute in their pay off and the payments fluctuate. Since they are usually 15-30 years in duration, they allow for price mark up. Where treasuries and straight agency debt allow for a few ticks to a .25, MBS’s can create spreads between buying and selling them up to a ½ or ¾ of point. This can translate to a $5,000 commission on a $1 million sale. Remember, a million dollars in one bond is not unusual for most institutions, and for banks over $500 million in assets, it’s normal.

Textbook Finance 101

This course provides an introduction to the basics of real estate financing, from qualifying the borrower and qualifying the property in the underwriting process, to the various types of financing available, to closing the sale. The course begins with a review of the basic mathematical concepts and calculations that will be necessary to understand the material. We then progress into a discussion of the forces that control the market: supply, demand, and the government. This leads us into the third lesson.

Most real estate is purchased with borrowed money. The methods of real estate finance are many and varied. Lenders run risks in making real estate loans and for this reason they must have a firm grasp of a borrower’s financial qualifications. They consider a borrower’s income, credit, debt, source of funds, and net worth. But no analysis, no matter how thorough, of a borrower’s creditworthiness can be enough to make a loan free of risk.

The fourth lesson of this module is concerned with how the lender qualifies loan applicants; the fifth is concerned with how the lender qualifies the property to be mortgaged. This involves a thorough and accurate property valuation, using the sales comparison or cost approach for residential property and a cap rate or discounted cash flow analysis for investment property. These methods of valuation will be discussed in depth, so that the student will feel confident and familiar with them when he or she meets them in the real world.

The basics of the financing and sale process are discussed in lessons six and seven. The student will learn how title, the abstract ownership rights to the property, is transferred to the buyer with a deed. The earnest money contract will also be discussed: terms of the contract, contingencies, and earnest money deposits. In lesson seven, the focus turns to closing. The student will learn the customary costs involved in a real estate transaction; how certain items are prorated between the buyer and the seller; and the requirements set forth by the Real Estate Settlement and Procedures Act (RESPA).

Lesson eight discusses foreclosure. It considers what happens when a borrower is in default of the mortgage contract and how lenders may help borrowers prevent foreclosure through forbearance, moratoriums, and recasting. Also discussed is how, when these techniques fail, the property is foreclosed, sold at auction, and the creditors repaid.

The module continues with the types of mortgages available. The ninth and tenth lessons discuss the elements of conventional loans—both conforming and nonconforming—adjustable rate, graduated payment, growth equity, and reverse annuity mortgages, to name a few. The advantages and disadvantages of each type of financing are emphasized, so that the student may better understand the decision making process inherent in real estate finance.

Two specific types of financing, FHA-insured and VA-guaranteed loans, are reserved for separate lessons. FHA loans are insured by the government and perceived as less risky by lenders. They are available to all natural and naturalized U.S. citizens, but they carry an uncancelable monthly insurance premium. VA loans are guaranteed in part by the government, but are only available to veterans, active servicemen, and certain national guardspersons and special reservists.

The thirteenth lesson deals with a topic important to real estate investment, IRC Section 1031 exchanges. Buying and selling real estate investments can be a tax-heavy business. By “exchanging” one’s investments under the continuity of investment principle, investors can receive more financing and improve their portfolios.

At the end of each lesson, the student will be asked to complete a quiz that tests the information covered in that lesson in order to move on to the next lesson. The module ends with a real world practice lesson that brings together the concepts and material discussed throughout the entire module.

Municipality Bond Broker - Municipalities Investing

States, City Governments, School Districts and local Municipal Authorities buy fixed income investments. State government investments are almost normally handled by large money management firms, as do most large cities. These 2 entities will be too large for an individual bond broker usually.

However, municipalities like the “City of La Porte, Texas” fit into our client mode. A city like this may have a $20 million - $40 million portfolio of treasuries and agencies, and would be the perfect size municipality for a bond broker. They probably buy in $500,000 - $1,000,000 amounts at a time and could be persuaded to look at other types not currently bought. This is the size you want. Small Cities, Small to medium size counties, large school districts, medium to large authorities. An “Oakland Housing Authority” could have a $30 million dollar portfolio easy. Like all municipalities, they are prohibited from buying stock or other equities, so their bond portfolio is “up for grabs”

Objections you will encounter will mainly be things like “I only deal locally” or “I have enough coverage”. The brokers who never become successful will accept these objections and move on. Do not accept these. These objections are easy to overcome. It may take time. An institution may not buy from you for a 6 months or even 1 year. All fixed income bonds are deliverable to their local bank. It does not matter where they come from. A treasury is a treasury, An agency is an agency. You would prefer that they send the money to your brokerage firm and have the bonds safe kept at your firm, but it does not have to that way.

The wonderful thing about municipalities is that they will always have revenue and will maintain a fairly consistent portfolio. They work off of tax revenue, and we know that flow will always come in. The negative is that they buy what they buy. It is easier and advisable to improve on their rate of return based on what they currently buy, and not try to change them into different investments. Governments are very set in their ways, and you should just play within their current policy. A good thing to do with these accounts is have them send you their current investment policy. This will show what they are currently allowed to buy. It limits your liability in pushing an investment that is not covered in their policy, and it gives you an opportunity to see something they can buy, that they may not currently hold.

For leads, you will need to rely on public directories available through the library. Look each one up based on size and location. Go to their web site for current information. Double check phone number, fax number etc. You are looking to call the “Treasurer” or “investment officer”. Don’t call up the City of Cleveland and ask to speak to the Mayor.

There are many people who feel that to make money in today’s market and in the future, you must work off of advisory fees and not commissions. An investment Adviser is someone who manages a portfolio or advises a person what to do in their portfolio. For these services, a career Financial Adviser can retain a fee for doing so. They operate much like an Accountant or an Attorney would. Rather than directly sell a security for commission, they will receive a fixed percentage of the assets they manage. The license that most of them receive is the SERIES 65 (Registered Investment Adviser). What makes this arrangement attractive for the Adviser is that your income stream is much steadier. Your fees are set so if a customer is not particularly active, you still retain the normal advisory fee you charge. The arrangement is equally beneficial to the customer. Note: The SERIES 65 does not need to be sponsored and can be practiced independently.

A few states do not require an individual to hold a SERIES 65 to practice investment advice but it is a good idea to get it anyway. You want to be aware of certain rules and background of the industry. The licensing curriculum will explain all of the securities that apply. It is also a good “Title” to practice business under. Thousands and thousands of CPA’s, Lawyers, and other professionals have obtained their SERIES 65 license. Finding a job with a firm in this industry is different from others. Your choices are broad and the way you go about it can enhance your chances. Don’t just look for job ads in the newspaper or the Internet. Call up the firms themselves and inquire about openings even if they are not advertising. Look in your local phone book and call them. You may have an office of a terrific firm in your town that might hire you. Do not ask the receptionist if they are hiring. Ask to speak to the Sales Manager in particular. The Sales Manager of a firm is paid largely on the production of the brokers he’s managing. So, if you sound eager enough and come across well on the phone, I guarantee he will at least take your name and give it consideration if not bring you in that same day!

To be a successful Stockbroker will ultimately depend on your work ethic and sales ability. The licensing tests (including the SERIES 7) that you will have to take pale in comparison to what you will make of your new career when you are in that office and prospecting.

Brokering is sales, pure and simple. Regardless of where you work or what investments you sell, if you do not communicate effectively or motivate yourself, you will become frustrated and not succeed. If you stay committed and enjoy talking to people then you can make a lot of money and have a ball doing it. It is the greatest career when you see your work paying off. The money can be tremendous and very satisfying. To be truly financially independent, you must be in a career where you can get paid based on your performance. No business will reward you more than Investment Sales. You can’t look at these jobs as salary positions. The firm that is hiring you is providing you with the ability to make an unlimited income. Consider it like starting your own business with no start up money, the office rent is paid, the phone is paid and usually includes a free secretary. So, when you see minimal salaries in this business, try to look at it that way.

“I would rather have a guaranteed salary and not work on commission”

There are companies that rely more on customer service representatives and the Internet with their business. These could include discount firms like: Charles Schwab or Waterhouse Securities. These firms will hire new employees to answer incoming calls and process trades. Salary range is somewhere between $25,000-$35,000. Most people who wish to get the most out of a brokerage career will not choose this type of position. You can execute trades but you also will be taking calls regarding lost or incorrect account statements and other non-market related inquires. You are also much more susceptible to lay offs or downsizing in a bear market. Your true worth and potential as it relates to income will not be realized in this type of job. Research and analysis offered by the firm is also an important factor when evaluating a firm to begin a career. All firms have one or several analysts they use. Primary firms normally have their own in-house department. An analyst will provide the firm with research and recommendations on which stocks to consider. Technical Analysis is the study of pricing trends of the stock and general behavior in the market. They will examine things like: Trading ranges, price volatility, and performance versus other stocks in the market or versus it’s industry. Fundamental Analysis examines the company’s financial statements and earnings. A Fundamental Analyst might look at a company’s “Price Earnings ratio”. P/E as it is commonly called is the relationship between a company’s stock price and what the company’s earnings are on a “per share basis”.

A typical ad reads like this:

“Stockbroker Trainees wanted. Unlimited income.
Work with top producers. Be your own boss and
build your own business. No experience necessary.
Will train and provide Series 7 sponsorship”

Sound to good to be true? Maybe, but the fact is many people have changed their lives by becoming a Stockbroker or any Investment Professional. Brokerage firms that pay their brokers mostly on commission are always job hiring. The idea that an unlicensed or inexperienced person will not be able to find a lot of openings is false. The risk that a stock brokerage firm takes when hiring new brokers in minimal.

A stock firm does not pay much in salary when their careers begin. $250-$500 weekly during training is the average. So, if a firm hires someone at $350 a week, the upside to the firm is high. You have to consider the initial loss of income when entering this business. If you are 20 years old, you might not consider that pay in the beginning as that low. Older workers with more personal and financial responsibilities have to consider it a little more.

Having some sort of degree can enhance your job employment options and career choices. Many larger or “primary” firms require a 2 or 4 year degree. The degree does not have to be investment or financial related though. These firms use this as a gauge for maturity and commitment. A primary firm would be companies such as Merrill Lynch or Paine Webber. Primary firms have several advantages for an employee. Primary firms can have hundreds of branch offices in almost every city. The large firms will also provide better training programs for there new Representatives. These companies when they are hiring will provide a better salary or training allowance.

The name recognition of the firm you are working for as a Stockbroker can also make client gathering easier. The downside in working with larger firms can include: Decreased commission percentage, less freedom on who you can prospect and lower tolerance for failing to pass your required licensing tests. Primary firms that pay an above average salary to start may only allow one chance to pass your test. So you usually better pass your SERIES 7 or whatever other license you need on the first try.

With these companies, it is best to go to their web site and search for a branch office near you. Most branch offices do their own hiring. Call the branch directly and ask for the Sales Manager in charge of hiring new Agents. If you are unable to find one then go to “career opportunities”. In that section, you will at least have an option to email or an 800 number to call. All of the following have multiple offices located in almost every state in the country. Most of these companies will consider allowing individuals to work as an independent. CPA’s and Accountants are being heavily recruited as well.

Bondbroker

There are many people in the market making an excellent living who are not involved in the stock market. For investors, bonds can be a very attractive alternative to stocks. The bond market also offers very diversified client potential. Institutional customers such as Banks, Insurance Companies, Credit Unions, Foundations, City and Town Governments and Individuals buy bonds.

The modern day Stockbroker is somewhat limited on the clients they can pursue. Individuals and business are the primary market with them. City Governments, Credit Unions, Banks and Insurance Companies either cannot buy stock or they only buy them as part of a mutual fund but they all buy bonds.

Bonds are normally sold based on a “mark up” from where your firm can buy them from another broker dealer. Meaning, once a new issue of bonds has traded in the market, it becomes a secondary issue. A secondary issue is one that is available to be bought and sold in the open market. If you work for a regional firm that does not do there own new issue underwriting, they will have to buy bonds from another dealer. If a bond is being offered by another dealer priced at $99 for instance ($10,000 bond at $99 = $9900) , you can sell it to your customer at $99 1/4. The quarter point will be your firms mark up and you will receive a commission off of that. You should target larger clients when pursuing bond investment business because there isn’t a lot of money in trading them unless you are buying at least $10,000 of it.

Most bond brokers who do make good incomes will sell to institutions who generally don’t buy stock and who invest a lot more money. Institutional bond trades can vary between $100,000 to several million dollars. When prospecting these clients, you must ask very specific questions as to which types of bonds they buy, how long of a maturity they normally go, what minimum rating they need and how large is their current portfolio.

Individuals (not institutions) buy bonds as well. Municipal bonds are very popular with retail customers. Municipal bonds are bonds issued by States, Cities, Towns and school districts. They are also called “Tax Free Bonds” because the interest earned on them is tax free from federal taxes. They are subject to state and local tax though. They are most attractive to investors in higher tax brackets. If you are looking to work independently through a firm, you should contact primary firms such as: Merrill Lynch, Paine Webber etc. and ask if you can offer their bonds and split the commissions. A firm that agrees will fax you their inventory on a daily basis.

Stockbroker Cold Call

As with most sales positions, prospecting clients is a large part of your ultimate success or failure. “Cold Calling” is something that most new brokers will have to engage in. Established brokers should dedicate some time everyday to calling new business as well. The term itself sounds as cold as it’s name but it is a necessity. “Cold Calling”, for those who do not know is calling prospects for the first time. The goal on these calls is to introduce yourself and your firm to the client your talking to. Brokerage firms will normally provide some type of prospect or “lead base” from which you can call on.

Most of these leads come from business directories such as Dunn and Bradstreet or they come from companies that manufacture lists. If you are planning to start your own firm or work independently out of your home, you can obtain these as well. Business directories such as the “D&B” can be found in any library and “List companies” will sell you lists that can be very specific to your target base. Such lists available could be: large companies, small companies, foundations, individuals with a $1 million in net worth to $10 million in net worth. You could use lists consisting of people who have a certain amount in the market. There is a list for anything and obviously the Internet can be used gather information.

Being comfortable on the phone is your ticket to success in this business. Stockbrokers, mutual fund agents, investment advisers, or any sales area of the business must use the phone and make the most of it. Now, we all have had various solicitors cold call us at home and at work and usually we are looking to just get the person off the phone as quickly as possible. Why?, because we don’t want to be bothered right? They always seem to call us while we are just walking out the door, eating dinner or watching a movie. Thank goodness for caller ID and answering machines right? Well, all of these defense mechanisms you have used will be used against you now when you are prospecting. I know a successful real estate developer in Long Island NY who has a very large investment portfolio.

He probably has over $1 million in the stock market alone. He told me he gets an average of 15 calls a day from various investment brokers at his office. He does talk with many and does business with a few but most do not even get past the secretary. He says that some of them will say and do anything to get through. Some call up his office pretending they are a friend of his and one actually told the secretary that he was his brother (he doesn’t have a brother). These stories may seem funny but it does happen out there.

Series 7 Sponsorship

Sponsorship means that a firm registered with the NASD (basically all Stock brokerage firms) must approve and present a candidate to the NASD for testing. The purpose and application of a SERIES 7 license for instance, is to sell securities to customers. Well, that is only possible if the person is representing a firm in some capacity. So the NASD requires a firm to act as sponsor, to basically be the responsible party for that candidate. Now you can work as an investment broker independently (working out of your own office or home) but you still must be affiliated or employed with a firm before you can sign up for a sponsored test. Basically, you can’t sell securities yourself without a firm facilitating the trading of that security. We dedicate a section to the set up process of working independently later on.

“ I want to get my Series 7 before I look for a job”

Some people looking to enter the industry inquire about getting licensed first before securing employment. Well, there are some licenses that you can get on your own but the SERIES 7 isn’t one of them. Again, because the NASD does not consider the license relevant unless you are with a firm at that time to sponsor you. It is not like a Real Estate license. But, what many people do not realize is although some wish to hire SERIES 7 brokers; most firms do not require a SERIES 7 for employment consideration.

Series 7 Firm Element Continuing Education

To continue as a Registered Representative, you will be required to do some periodic “Continuing Education” or firm elelement ce. Most people who hold professional licenses will do some form of CE. Real Estate, Accounting, CPA and brokerage included. Series 7 representatives will have to complete a CE module at the testing center on every 2nd, 5th and 10 year anniversary from their original licensing date.

It is not a Pass or Fail test. It is more of a rules reinforcement and customer account-handling module. You will move in and out of different sections until the computer feels you have learned the information. Your firm or the NASD can assist you when your time comes up to do this.

Finding a job with a firm in this industry is different from others. Your choices are broad and the way you go about it can enhance your chances. Don’t just look for job ads in the newspaper or the Internet. Call up the firms themselves and inquire about openings even if they are not advertising. Look in your local phone book and call them. You may have an office of a terrific firm in your town that might hire you. Do not ask the receptionist if they are hiring. Ask to speak to the Sales Manager in particular. The Sales Manager of a firm is paid largely on the production of the brokers he’s managing. So, if you sound eager enough and come across well on the phone, I guarantee he will at least take your name and give it consideration if not bring you in that same day!

To be a successful Stockbroker will ultimately depend on your work ethic and sales ability. The licensing tests (including the SERIES 7) that you will have to take pale in comparison to what you will make of your new career when you are in that office and prospecting.

Brokering is sales, pure and simple. Regardless of where you work or what investments you sell, if you do not communicate effectively or motivate yourself, you will become frustrated and not succeed. If you stay committed and enjoy talking to people then you can make a lot of money and have a ball doing it. It is the greatest career when you see your work paying off. The money can be tremendous and very satisfying. To be truly financially independent, you must be in a career where you can get paid based on your performance. No business will reward you more than Investment Sales. You can’t look at these jobs as salary positions. The firm that is hiring you is providing you with the ability to make an unlimited income. Consider it like starting your own business with no start up money, the office rent is paid, the phone is paid and usually includes a free secretary. So, when you see minimal salaries in this business, try to look at it that way.

Stockbroker Salary and Commission

A stock firm does not pay much in salary. $250-$500 weekly during training is the average. So, if a firm hires someone at $350 a week, the upside to the firm is high. You have to consider the initial loss of income when entering this business. If you are 20 years old, you might not consider that pay in the beginning as that low. Older workers with more personal and financial responsibilities have to consider it a little more.

Having some sort of degree can enhance your employment options. Many larger or “primary” firms require a 2 or 4 year degree. The degree does not have to be investment or financial related though. These firms use this as a gauge for maturity and commitment. A primary firm would be companies such as Merrill Lynch or Paine Webber. Primary firms have several advantages for an employee. Primary firms can have hundreds of branch offices in almost every city. The large firms will also provide better training programs for there new Representatives. These companies when they are hiring will provide a better salary or training allowance. The name recognition of the firm you are working for can also make client gathering easier. The downside in working with larger firms can include: Decreased commission percentage, less freedom on who you can prospect and lower tolerance for failing to pass your required licensing tests. Primary firms that pay an above average salary to start may only allow one chance to pass your test. So you usually better pass your SERIES 7 or whatever other license you need on the first try.

Some Primary firms have been known to take people without college degrees but they would then look at other related experience to make up for it. A person with sales or business experience could be considered. A high school diploma will get you a job at most small to medium sized Stock brokerage houses.

Independent Financial Advisor - Start Your Own Firm

Many brokers and financial advisors are looking to work on an independent basis. That could be operating a branch office of an existing firm, starting their own NASD brokerage firm or practicing as an investment advisor, while peforming other services (CPA, Insurance, Mortgage etc)

You will basically act as a broker as if you are in the firm’s very own office. They will provide you with phone access to the traders to call in your transactions. You will have access to the firm’s research. The firm will also allow you to have access to real time quotes and pricing software. Another big advantage to working independently with a firm is payout.

The payout for someone in working on their own can be as high as 70-80% of the total trade compared to 40-50% working at a firm’s office. There is no long-term salary in these situations. They are simply setting you up and you must now run it as your own business. Some companies will also look for some sort of minimum sales volume after you are established.

There are many firms that will look to establish home office relationships.

If you are an experienced broker or advisor with money under management, there are NASD or other firms that may want you to work for them out of your own home or office.

The Series 7 is a 250 question multiple choice test that when passed will license you as a registered representative with the NASD. This license can be used by Stockbrokers, Mutual Fund brokers, Bond brokers and more.

The exam normally takes 6-8 weeks to prepare and you get your results right after the test.

The Series 7 covers all types of securities, including Stocks, Bonds, Options, Retirement Planning and Funds. It also covers NASD rules and regulations. It is delivered in two 3 hour parts of 130 questions each (Only 250 questions are graded). 70% is the score needed to pass the exam.

A Stockbroker must pass this test to become licensed and able to contact customers and sell securities through the NASD.
